Shopping in Kalimantan mostly centres on the resort towns of Balikpapan, Pontianak and Palangka Raya where one can buy some of the finest pieces of handicrafts and handmade local products. The Kalimantan region includes several groups of Dayak indigenous tribes who have habited the island for centuries. Traditional and commercial handicrafts made by these tribes such as beadwork, basketry, mandaus, blowpipes and carvings are best found in the towns of Balikpapan, Samarinda, and Banjarmasin. On the other hand, the town of Palangkaraya is well known for its pleated rattan products like hats and bags. There are plenty of interesting souvenirs shopping happening around jewellery and figurines made from semi-precious stones, gold, silver, brass, iron and wood. Don’t forget to carry back home traditional 'kain songket' made from gold or silver thread work and tie-dye batik fabrics. Here are some shopping centres in Kalimantan which stock genuine traditional handicrafts and commercial products.
